Sexuality in Music and Movies

            Many songs and movies have sexual references in them. You may go to the movies to see a funny movie and many of the jokes have sexual references in them. Music also has plenty of sexual references and many different genres of music have these references. The lyrics to these songs may be sexual, but the music videos that go along with those songs are sexual as well.

Sexuality is really prominent in today’s music. Most people first think of rap music as having sexual influences and a lot of it does, but many country songs have these references as well. Rock music may not be the first type of music that you may think of as having sexuality, but many rock songs that I hear on the radio actually has some type of sexuality in them. One song that comes to mind, and is really awful in my opinion, is called “Porn Star Dancing” by the band My Darkest Days. The entire song is about strippers and the lyrics to the chorus really capture what the whole song is about. The lyrics to the chorus are,

 “She wraps those hands around that pole
She licks those lips and off we go
She takes it off nice and slow
Because that's pornstar dancin'"[1]

                                                            The song also has a music video that has the band playing their instruments in a strip club. The video is full of girls dancing on poles and they are wearing very small amounts of clothing.[2] Rock music may not be the first type of music that comes to mind when you think of sexuality but it is definitely out there.

            Movies also have sexuality in them and comedy movies have a lot of sexual jokes or just funny things that have to do with sex to make you laugh. The movie Ted has sexuality in it and many people find it comical. At one part of the movie Ted is talking about having sex with a woman in the movie. People find it funny because he is a teddy bear and teddy bears are supposed to be toys for kids, not living creatures that talk about having sex with a woman in the movie. There are also movies that have very sexual main characters. The movie Magic Mike is an example of this type of thing. After doing some research about the movie, because I have never seen it, I found out that the movie is about a male stripper who takes a young performer and shows him the ropes.[3] I was reading a summary of the movie and it was talking about the strip club that he works at. The quote is, “a male strip joint in Tampa that fills every weekend night with drunken, horny women eager to slide dollar bills between hard-bodied dudes and the G-strings they wear.”[4] This part of the summary really caught my attention because it really describes how sexual the movie really is.

            Sexuality is everywhere in movies and music in today’s society. I could have given hundreds of examples for both music and movies because there is so much sexuality in both of them in today’s society.
